Day Nineteen - Photo a Day

Sunday, March 16th, 2008 Posted in Photo a Day | No Comments »

I’m allowing myself a little grace from this assignment today. While I didn’t actually shoot this today, I did process it today. This is from my Friday shoot with Aux Choux. I love the imperfections of this photo as I was shooting hand-held through a glass in the display case.

As trite as photos of flowers can be I couldn’t resist.

Today was a fun one. I shot a number of specialty desserts for Aux Choux, a dessert café in Franklin, TN. Crystal is a fine dessert maker and super to work with. Here is one of the many fun shots from the shoot.

Today I was on assignment for a cookbook. This is one shot that stands out as I’m only midway through first edits.

I have this strange love affair with old and new technology. Here that contradiction plays out with old wood type and a new iPod Nano.

Can the common look scrumptious? I guess that’s pretty subjective, just like taste buds.

Cheese, cracker and tomato

What will tomorrow bring? Hopefully more food.

I’ve always had an affinity for typography. Even as I look at drawings from my childhood I could see my fascination with the letter form. In art school my love for type was ignited further via Eric Ligon who we dubbed the “Type God.” Today, my eye is drawn to type and in this case the end margins of some fabric being used by my wife for a quilt.

Shooting more food. I can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing … other than devouring it.

Well, this is still a good challenge. Ten days into it and my eye is still finding fun stuff to shoot.

In most food shoots you don’t get to eat the subject as it’s been manipulated with foreign objects to the point that one bite would send you to the ER. But, in this case, I was fortunate to be able to eat to my hearts content, and WOW was it awesome!

In 1965 my parents moved back to the States after spending three years in Malawi, Africa. Their belongings were shipped (literally on a ship) in wooden crates. For years growing up we always had these slabs of wood from those crates in our garage. They recently found their way to my garage.

Determined not to haul this wood around for 43 more years I decided to hire the services of Brent Lenthal to convert them to something with longevity and immediate use.

Benches

I am thrilled with Brent’s craftsmanship and detail to what now will be a family heirloom. Mom and dad say the wood is Mlumbwa from Malawi.

What was new technology 3 years ago seems very common and even old today.

Good morning. Remnants of a quilt Amy is making caught my eye and became the subject of my shoot this morning.

Day Five - Photo a Day

Just so you know, you may notice two posts/photos in a single day. I’m allowing myself a little grace as the intent of this self imposed assignment is to shoot. Shoot more than normal. Shoot to be pushed. So, the net will be one photo per day, but you may see me shooting to get ahead or catch up.

Do Not Remove

I love the irony of this tag.

I found this fella in Florida a few months back and have been keeping him waiting for an opportunity to shoot him. Today was his day.
